Evolution: Do You Have What it Takes to Survive?

One of the greatest aspects of most card games is the endless variety of strategies you can employ. With expansion packs and extra card sets, you can explore new methods of gameplay and tactics that keep the game feeling fresh every time. Evolution embraces this to the max by taking on genetic evolution, perhaps the most diverse process of all.

In this engaging and multi-faceted card game, you’ll develop your species to be tough, wily, and resourceful as you try and survive against the bloodthirsty predators. Will your strategy focus on defending against the Carnivores or will you become the hungry hunter yourself? Anything is possible in the fun and primal world of Evolution.

The Process of Evolution

Evolution is more than just a card game with a simple theme as a gimmick. This challenging and multi-layered card game is driven by the process of evolution the very same way that life on Earth is. Players have to build their species to adapt in a dynamic ecosystem with scarce food supplies and dangerous predators. In the game of Evolution, it’s adapt or die.

Each player begins the game with a basic species, establishing a set body size and population for your species. Throughout each turn, players will try to grow their species by adding new species, increasing its body size, and evolving it into something that can survive more easily. Will you evolve your species to have a Hard Shell and Horns to protect it from Carnivores or a Long Neck to help them get food that’s out of reach?

Players will have to decide which step they’ll want to take to manage their species in order to gain enough food to survive. At the end of each round, each species must have enough food to eat for their population or their population will be reduced. The winner of the game is the player with the most food eaten and the highest total population of all their species.

Predator vs. Prey

In addition to the over 4,000 different ways you can evolve your species, Evolution offers players the ability to turn their species into predators. Predators can eat the other species, but they must have larger body sizes than their prey and they have to be able to catch them. For example, if your species is capable of climbing, then only a larger predator who can also climb can potentially eat you.

When players get dealt cards each round, one card per person is donated to the central feeding pool. After each player spends their cards, the feeding pool is revealed and players grab them one at a time to feed their species. However, predators are not allowed to feed from the feeding pool, instead of being forced to attack their opponents.

Evolution Sequels Expansions

Evolution comes with a sequel and an expansion card game that each introduces new elements into the game. Evolution: Climate is a standalone game that adds climate to the mix, giving you scorching hot and icy cold climates that can threaten your species. This will force you to take on new evolutionary traits such as Heavy Fur and Migratory that will protect you from the cold.

Evolution: Flight is an expansion that introduces species that can fly into your ecosystem. This adds a new ability to get hard-to-reach food as well as attack unsuspecting prey. If players decide to create a flying species, they must discard 2 cards instead of 1. However, they have an additional source of food from the Cliff and they can’t be attacked by predators who can’t fly.

Evolution is playable by 2-6 players, so it’s a great game for families or one-on-one games. Spot It!: The Family Game of Matching

Spot it! is a card game for 2 to 8 players, but can be played with up to 13. Super unlucky number, I know…

Spot It! has 55 circular cards each of which contains eight symbols varying by shape and color. One card will contain all the symbols matching in either shape or color (or both), while the other card will show something different; this is what you are matching.

Spot It! requires speed, observation skills, and pattern recognition to find matches between pairs of cards as quickly as possible and get rid of your hand before everyone else. The winner is the player who gets rid of their cards first and has collected the fewest cards at that point; ties go to the player with more sets.

This card game was created in 2008 by Blue Orange Games, an American game publisher that offers an array of card games, board games, puzzle toys, and party games. The game was the winner of Dr. Toy’s 10 Best Active Play Games Award in 2011, among many other awards.

Spot It! has also earned the Specialty Retailers’ 2012 Game Of The Year Award as well as multiple Teachers’ Choice Awards for its educational value.

Some card games may last up to 30 minutes or so but Spot it! can be finished much faster than that since each hand usually lasts only a few minutes. This card game is perfect for a family night where everyone will have fun matching symbols while competing against one another at the same time!

It includes various princesses from Disney movies such as Pocahontas and Rapunzel as well as other characters like Belle and Tiana. The symbols used on cards are different than those found in Holiday Spot it! and each card contains two character images instead of one.

Frozen Fever was the second Spot it! Challenge expansion, released in 2015. Like its predecessor, Disney Princess, it uses a different set of symbols than Holiday Spot it! and each card contains two images instead of one. However, Frozen Fever has characters from both the Frozen movie as well as characters from Disney’s short film Frozen Fever such as Anna and Elsa.

Bananagrams: Quit Monkeying Around!

Bananagrams is one of those classic word games that almost everyone has an edition of sitting around somewhere in their closet. With the trademark little felt banana bag and those user-friendly letter tiles, you can easily mix and match words to create your own crossword and be the first to shout out “Bananagrams!” If you’re a fan of classic word games like Scrabble or Boggle but are looking for something a little more fast-paced, you’ll love Bananagrams.

Arranging the Tiles

Bananagrams is an incredibly simple and fast-paced game that uses small tiles to form words in the shape of a grid. In this sense, it is incredibly similar to Scrabble, although Bananagrams gets rid of the game board and speeds things up by allowing each player to make their own grid. To make their words, players get to use 144 tiles that all come in a cute little bag shaped like a banana.

Bananagrams begins with all of the tiles being flipped and placed in the center of the table. Each player then takes 12 tiles and begins arranging them into words in the form of a grid, similar to the way a crossword is set up. Once a player uses up all of the letters in their bunch, they shout “peel!” and everyone has to take a new tile from the pool in the center.

If you’re stuck with a bunch of bum letters that you can’t place, then you can dump one of your tiles and draw three more. While this can help you dig your way out of the hole, beware! You may only find yourself deeper in the pit with more tiles you can’t use. Once the pool in the center of the table is almost empty, then the first person to use all of their tiles shouts out “Bananagrams!” and wins the game.

Variant Rules

Bananagrams is incredibly simple, with hands usually taking as little as 5 minutes. However, there are different variant rules within the game itself that you can use depending on where you are and how complex you want the game to be. The Banana Smoothie of the board game gives everyone their own bunch of tiles right at the start of the game, dividing it equally among everyone. This allows you to plan out your whole crossword right at the beginning.

The Banana Cafe version of Bananagrams is meant to be played in public when waiting for service. Players play with 21 tiles and are allowed to dump tiles and draw more if they need to, but they don’t have to “peel” and force anyone else to draw more tiles. You can also play the Banana Solitaire version of Bananagrams to play the game all on your own, competing against your own best time.

Bananagrams Sequels

There are several sequels to the original Bananagrams board game that allow you to play it with new and complex rules. Bananagrams Duel! turns the board game into a two-player word game that uses both letter cubes and Banana cards. Players use any side of their 12 letter cubes to try to create a crossword grid, competing for Banana cards to see who can win the most rounds.

Bananagrams Party adds 14 more “party power” tiles to the original game. These tiles range from The Re-Gifter to The Thief to Switcheroo, with each giving you a special power to use against your opponents. Bananagrams WildTiles adds 6 wild monkey tiles to the game, each of which can be used as whatever letter you like. This is similar to the wild tiles in Scrabble, which can help you make a new word when you can’t seem to find the letter you need.

Bananagrams: Wordplay Never Tasted So Sweet

Bananagrams is playable by 1-8 players, so you can easily play it with the whole family or just on your own when you’re killing time. It’s suitable for ages 7 and up, as anyone can grasp the simplicity of the rules. Playing time lasts around 15 minutes, although you’ll definitely be playing best of 5 or best of 10.
